DIY Instant Oatmeal Protein Packets

I love instant oatmeal packets but hate all the extra ingredients the store bought versions contain. I started making these DIY Instant Oatmeal Protein Packets about a year ago. I love that they are made with whole foods and take no time to whip up. Plus, oatmeal is so good for you. I think it is amazing that oatmeal can actually lower bad levels of cholesterol!

These save me tons of time in the morning when I need something fast and easy. My favorite flavor is raisin and spice but feel free to create your own favorite flavor combinations.

To make your own instant oatmeal packets, you will need: 1/3 cup oats (either old fashioned or quick oats work), one teaspoon chia seeds, one teaspoon cinnamon, half teaspoon nutmeg and allspice, three tablespoons raisins, one tablespoon flax seed meal, and two tablespoons protein powder. Of course, you can leave ingredients out that you don’t like or substitute them with ingredients you do like. Leave the raisins out, or substitute with dried blueberries or cherries. Add nuts, adjust the spices to your liking. These packets are easy to customize to your own personal preferences. I use unflavored pea protein, you can use whatever type and flavor of protein powder you have and/or prefer.

Combine all these dry ingredients into a small zip top baggie. I found my bags at Aldi’s, I believe they were a seasonal item. Label each bag with the flavor of the oatmeal. I like to make about two weeks worth of these at a time so we can make oatmeal quickly on busy mornings. To use your diy instant oatmeal protein packets, simply pour the contents of one baggie into a microwave safe bowl. Make sure to use a large bowl since the oatmeal will bubble up and expand while cooking. Add three quarter cup milk, or water, and stir to combine. Microwave on high for one to one and a half minutes. Alternatively, you could boil water on the stove and add that to your oatmeal. You can adjust the amount of liquid you use to create a consistency you prefer. I like my oatmeal more on the dry side (I find it’s easier and faster to eat that way), but other family members like their oatmeal like soup. I don’t get it but to each their own!  I like to sweeten my oatmeal a little bit with liquid stevia extract, others prefer brown sugar. Honey is another option you could use to sweeten things up a bit.

Without protein powder, each packet has 5 grams of protein, with powder it goes up to 19 grams per serving. These numbers will vary slightly based on what protein powder you use, and how much you use in each packet. These packets are great for a quick breakfast before school, work, or working out. These are also nice to have when company is staying over. They make it easy to have a quick and healthy breakfast each morning. We’ve taken these along with us on vacation and are a great alternative to eating sugary, processed breakfasts out. It’s so easy when all you need is some hot water!

There are so many ways to customize these packets to your and your family’s liking. Experiment with different ingredients and get creative! Dried blueberries, apples, slivered almonds, chopped walnuts and pecans are just a few suggestions. Play around with different combinations to find your favorite. Enjoy!

Instructions
  1. Combine all the ingredients listed under basic recipe in a small zip top baggie. Make substitutions as to what flavor you'd like to make. DO NOT ADD ANY LIQUID INGREDIENTS TO THE PACKETS! If you want to add anything liquid to your oatmeal, add it when you're making the oatmeal, not the packets.
  2. To make oatmeal, pour one packet into large microwave safe bowl. Add 3/4 cup water, or milk, and stir. Add any additional liquid ingredients at this point if you'd like; honey, stevia extract, etc. Cook for 1.5 - 2 minutes on high. Enjoy!
