I love combining different flavors and ingredients to make tasty protein shakes. Lately, I’ve been crashing in the afternoons, so I came up with this delicious, yet healthy, pick me up. This Hazelnut, Peanut Butter & Coffee Protein Shake has just the right amount of caffeine and protein to get me through till dinner.

Since too much caffeine on its own upsets my stomach, I knew I needed to include some substantial whole-food protein besides just protein powder. Peanut butter is naturally high in protein and, to my delight, tastes amazing combined with hazelnut flavored coffee!

There aren’t too many ingredients in this yummy protein shake: hazelnut coffee, unflavored protein powder, cocoa powder, smooth peanut butter, milk, ice and a tiny bit of stevia extract. I wanted to keep any additional sugar as minimal as possible. I brewed my coffee as normal and cooled it off for a bit in the freezer. If you plan ahead, you could make some the day before and then store it in the fridge. I wish I still had my French press as it was easy to use to make chilled coffee. I use pea protein powder that is unflavored. Obviously, vanilla or chocolate protein powder would also taste great in this shake.

 I bought a Magic Bullet several years ago for the sole purpose of making protein shakes. They are so much easier to use, and clean, then my full size blender was. Plus, they do a better job of blending single serving shakes. I’ve actually gotten rid of my full size blender since I completely quit using it once I bought the Magic Bullet.

I’ve found that it is best to first pour in your liquid ingredients and then add the powders on top. Otherwise, all the powder gets stuck at the top and doesn’t blend completely. To make this Hazelnut, Peanut Butter and Coffee Protein Shake, add ingredients in this order: one cup brewed (and chilled) hazelnut coffee, 1/4 cup milk, one cup ice, two tablespoons smooth peanut butter, one tablespoon protein powder, one tablespoon cocoa powder, and 1/8 teaspoon stevia extract. Blend until smooth, enjoy!
