It’s no secret that I love making all sorts of homemade sauces, seasonings and dressings at home. Why make something that’s easy to pick up already made? Lots of reasons! Mainly, homemade condiments are healthier! Then, there’s the fact that what you make at home is far superior to anything you could purchase, and for less cost. Most of the items I choose to make at home can be made with what you’ve already got in your kitchen. This Soy-Free Homemade Steak Sauce is quick, simple and delicious. Perfect for grilling season.
You may be wondering, “Why soy-free?” In an effort to reduce soy in my family’s diet, I was shocked to find that it is in way more food items than I’d ever thought. The problem comes from the phytoestrogens contained in soy, which can lead to an excess of estrogen in the body. Excess estrogen can lead to a myriad of hormone imbalance related health issues. There’s also the fact that most of the soy in our diets today is genetically modified, which leads to its own set of problems. There is soy that has health benefits, organic fermented soy, but that is not the type of soy we are typically going to find in many of the food items we purchase. To make your own Soy-Free Homemade Steak Sauce, you will need: 1/2 cup ketchup (next on my list of condiments to make-over!), 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard, 1 tablespoon brown sugar, 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar, 1 teaspoon olive oil, 3 cloves minced garlic, 1 teaspoon lime juice, 4 dashes hot pepper sauce, 1/8 teaspoon salt and pepper, and a pinch of each: cinnamon, cloves, cayenne and ginger (all dried and ground).
Combine everything together and whisk well! Enjoy this sauce as (duh) an accompaniment to steaks, a delicious spread for burgers or to flavor other recipes. I used this sauce in a slow cooker steak soup and it was fantastic! I’ll be posting that soon, so stay tuned!
